When researching, we found many types of Horror Films, all having a different effect on their viewers. Here are some popular sub-genres:
'Slasher Horror'
-typically involves a psychopathic killer who is stalking and killing a stream of victims
- but can also be used to describe films that just includes a set of graphic acts of murder or slaughter.
'Psychological Horror'
- the characters fear and emotions onscreen are used to build up tension in the storyline.
- Instead of using the typical use of materials such as masks and weapons to create obvious tension these sorts of films use things such as the atmosphere, and creepy sound effects such as 'eerie' non-diagetic sounds and also the manipulation of the viewers psychological fears.
'Supernatural Horror'
-It's main elements are ghosts, monsters and aliens.
-They deal with the unknown questions of life e.g. religious dilemmas.
-They create suspense amongst the viewers as they emphasize the unknown.
'Comedy Horror'
- almost always crosses over with the use of 'black' comedy.
- gives the viewers a chance to have a comical outlet and be able to laugh at their fears.
- may also be seen as a sub-genre of comedy.
